The Escorial is a huge palace-monastery in the hills near Madrid, in Spain. King Philip II had it built in the sixteenth century. It is not only a house for a king: the same pile of stone holds a church, a royal burial place, a famous library, and rooms of paintings. Students meet the name in history and art, the way they meet Versailles for France. People say ‘the Escorial’ as if everyone should know the building, because for Spain it is that kind of landmark. It is a place name, not a kind of furniture and not a general word for palace. Spanish speakers often say El Escorial.
