Eritrea is a country in the Horn of Africa, on the Red Sea. Sudan lies to the north and west; Ethiopia lies to the south. The capital is Asmara. It became independent from Ethiopia in 1993 after a long war, so in the news it is often mentioned with that history still attached. It is not a huge country in land, and it is not one that English meet every day, but it is a real state with its own government, coast, and people. Though actually, older maps and older books may still talk as if it belonged with Ethiopia; that is out of date. In English we say the country name as a place, and Eritrean for the people and the adjective.
組成Borrowed from Italian (l’)Eritrea, first used as a short form of la Colonia eritrea (“the Erythraean colony”). Italian eritreo comes from Latin erythraeus (“reddish”), from Ancient Greek ἐρυθρός (eruthrós, “red”) — the “red” of the Erythraean Sea, the old name for the Red Sea.
