Equivalence is the state of counting as the same for a purpose, even when two things are not the same kind of thing. A school may say a foreign exam has equivalence with a local one: it is not the same test, but they treat it as doing the same job. Two tools can have equivalence if they get the same work done. Equality is “the same.” Equivalence is “good enough to stand in for each other here.” In maths, logic, and chemistry the word gets a tighter, more technical life, though actually everyday English still uses the looser idea: these can take each other’s place for this job. It is a school-and-office word more than a kitchen-table word.
