Equestrian means to do with riding horses — the sport, the skill, the clothes, the events. Equestrian sports include show jumping and ; they appear in the Olympics. The word is also a noun: an equestrian is a horse rider, usually a fairly serious one. You will hear equestrian statue for a statue of a person sitting on a horse. It is a formal, slightly -sounding word. Most people just say horse-riding or riding. Though actually that “” feeling is part of how the word lives: in some places horse sport is tied to money and clubs, so equestrian can sound like a world with special kit and special schools, not like a child on a farm pony. The word comes from Latin for horse, not from equal, even though the beginning looks the same.
