Epicurean describes a way of taking pleasure through the senses, especially through good food and drink: a slow meal, a ripe fruit, a comfortable evening. As a noun, an Epicurean can still mean a follower of the old philosophy, but in everyday English the adjective has drifted toward “fond of fine taste and comfort”. Though actually, Epicurus himself did not preach excess; he taught that a good life is one with little pain and simple joys. English kept the name and changed the mood. Use it for the food-and-pleasure sense in ordinary writing; if you mean the philosophy, say so, or people will hear “nice dinner”.
