An epee (often written épée) is a long, thin sword with a sharp point, used in the sport of fencing. In modern life it is sports kit, not a battlefield weapon. Fencing has three main swords. The foil is light, and you may only score with a touch on the torso. The sabre can cut as well as point, and you may hit the upper body. The epee is stiffer and a little heavier than the foil, and — this is the rule students mix up — a touch on any part of the body can score. Both players may score at almost the same moment. People say the word like “eh-PAY”.

組成Borrowed from French épée, from Latin spatha, from Ancient Greek σπάθη (a broad blade). It is a doublet of spathe and spade: sibling words from that same old blade-word, not children of each other.
