When someone else has a thing you want — a phone, a grade, a trip, an easy kind of life — that wanting is envy. Enviously is how you do something with that feeling in it: you look enviously, speak enviously, watch enviously. The picture is always the same: they have it; you do not; you wish you did. Though actually, everyday English is messy here. In the tidy school rule, envious is “I want yours,” and jealous is “I am afraid to lose mine,” especially in love. In real talk, people say jealous for both, all the time — “I’m so jealous of your holiday” when they mean envious. Songs and friends do this constantly. Careful writing still keeps them apart, but you will hear the mix everywhere, and it does not make you a bad learner if you have mixed them too. The word is ordinary, a little unkind as a feeling, not slang and not stiff. You cannot use it for a thing nobody has yet; there has to be someone else already holding it.
