To envelop something is to cover it or wrap it so completely that it is inside, as if a cloth had been pulled all the way around it. Fog can envelop a harbour. Darkness can envelop a room. A blanket can envelop a child. Feelings can envelop you too — a quiet sadness, or a sudden warmth. The word is a little literary; in everyday talk people often say wrap, cover, or surround. Watch the spelling: the verb is envelop, with no extra e, and the stress falls on VEL (en-VEL-op). The paper thing you put a letter in is an envelope, with that extra e and different stress. They are family, but they are not the same word.
組成From Middle English envolupen, from Old French anveloper, envoluper (modern French envelopper): en- + voloper, “to wrap.” The idea is “wrap up.”
