To entreat someone is to ask them — but not a small, everyday ask. You ask with feeling, almost pleading, for them to do something for you, or to stop doing something. A child might entreat a parent to stay; a speaker might entreat a crowd to be kind. It is an old, slightly word. In speech today, most people say beg, plead, or please, I am asking you. You will meet entreat more in stories, speeches, and older writing than in a text message. It is not treat as in “be nice to someone,” and not treat as in a snack, even though it looks like those words.

組成From Late Middle English entreten, from Anglo-Norman entraiter, entretier and Old French entraictier, “to deal with, talk with, negotiate, plead with” — built on the same old French traiter that gives English treat in the “deal with” sense.
