An entity is something that exists as a single and complete unit — one thing you can name and treat as “one,” even if you cannot always touch it. A company is an entity. A country can be an entity. In law, a person and a company are both entities: they can own things and be taken to court. It is a formal, paper word; friends do not call a cat “an entity” unless they are joking. Though actually, people stretch it a lot: a team, a brand, even a ghost in a story can be called an entity when the speaker wants to say “this thing holds together as one.” In some political talk, people say “entity” instead of “country” when they do not want to give it the usual name — a cold way of saying it exists as a unit, without using the name it claims. The word does not tell you whether the thing is alive, good, or physical — only that it counts as one whole.
組成From Medieval Latin entitās, from Latin ēns (“being,” stem ent-) + -tās (the ending that makes an abstract noun, like English -ty). So the old meaning is “a being / the fact of being.”
