To enthral someone is to hold their attention so completely that they listen or watch with great care — they almost forget the room around them. It is a strong, slightly literary verb; everyday talk might say “it really grabbed me” or “I couldn’t look away.” Though actually, the oldest meaning was harsher: to make someone a thrall, a kind of slave. That old sense is now rare except in history or very high style. Today’s common meaning is fascination, not chains. British spelling is enthral (one l in the base form); American spelling is enthrall. You enthral a person, or an audience; you do not usually enthral a thing.
組成en- (to make into) + thrall (an old word for a slave, or a person under someone else’s power). The “make a slave” picture later softened into “hold someone’s mind.”
