An enterprising person notices a chance, thinks of a new plan, and then actually makes it work — not only in business, though that is a common home for the word. You can be an enterprising student, neighbour, or . It is a compliment: it praises energy and nerve, not just clever talk. It is a little more formal than “go-getting,” and kinder than calling someone . Though actually, if someone is enterprising in a selfish way, listeners may hear a slight edge — as if the person is always looking for an angle. Most of the time, though, teachers and newspapers use it with a smile.
