Ensuing describes what happens after a particular action or event, especially as a result of it: the ensuing days, the ensuing debate, the ensuing panic. It is the adjective partner of — the -ing form used to point forward from a moment you have just named. News and textbooks like it; it is more formal than next or later. Though actually, ensuing does not only mean 'the one after on a calendar'. It often carries because of that. The ensuing silence after a joke falls flat is not just the next patch of quiet; it is the silence that that joke produced. You can use it of time (the ensuing weeks) or of what breaks out (the ensuing argument). It still has that slightly , news-story feel.
