To ensconce yourself is to settle into a place and stay there because it feels comfortable, safe, or yours — a corner of the sofa, a seat by the window, sometimes a job you do not mean to leave. Grammar likes it : you ensconce yourself, or you are ensconced in an / in a quiet town / in a comfortable post. It is a , slightly humorous word; few people say it on the bus. The old picture underneath is a sconce, a small fort or place: you put yourself inside that shelter. Though actually, modern speakers almost never feel the fort; they feel 'tucked in and staying put'. It is not hiding in fear (that is closer to conceal), and it is not merely sitting down for a second. The mood is snug, and a little pleased with the spot you have claimed.
