Enniskillen is a town in Northern Ireland. In learner English the name is remembered for one terrible day: on Remembrance Day in November 1987, people had come to remember soldiers who died in war. The IRA — a group that used bombs in the long fight over Northern Ireland — set off a bomb there. Eleven people were killed. The attack shocked many people, including some who had been willing to look away before. Though actually, Enniskillen is also just a town with a long Irish name and a life before and after that morning. But in the news, and in many English books, the name still calls up that bomb.
