1. 1

An Englishwoman is a woman from England — the country whose capital is London, on the island of Britain. She is not simply “a woman who speaks English.” A woman from the United States, from Australia, or from Taiwan who speaks excellent English is still not an Englishwoman. People also mix this up with British. A woman from Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland is British, but she is not an Englishwoman. In careful talk that difference matters; in loose talk, especially outside the UK, people sometimes say English when they mean British. The matching word for a man is Englishman. The word is ordinary and clear, not slang and not fancy; you meet it in stories, news, and forms that ask where someone is from.

    英格蘭女子(不是「會說英語的女人」。台灣口語常說「英國女人」,但此字單指英格蘭,不含蘇格蘭、威爾斯、北愛爾蘭)
