Something energy-efficient uses as little energy as possible to do its job. We say it of machines, lights, cars, houses, and ways of working. An energy-efficient fridge still keeps food cold; it just takes less electricity. Shops and government ads in Taiwan talk about this a lot, because power costs money and people worry about waste. Careful writing usually keeps the (energy-efficient); you will also see it without one. Though actually, efficient alone is not the same: a machine can save time and still waste power. This word is only about energy — electricity, fuel, heat — not about whether a person feels lively.
「energy-efficient」用來形容用最少能源完成工作的東西，例如機器、燈、車、房子，甚至是工作方式。常見的說法是「an energy-efficient fridge」，節能冰箱照樣能讓食物保持冷藏，只是用的電比較少。
台灣的商店和政府廣告常提到這個字，因為電費和浪費的問題大家都在意。正式寫作通常保留連字號，也會看到不加的寫法。它只跟能源有關，電、燃料和熱都算，跟人有沒有精神無關。這個字本身不等於有效率：機器可以省時間，卻還是浪費電。
