Your body can make a chemical that quiets pain and can lift your mood. That chemical is an endorphin. It often shows up when you are hurt, when you run or train hard for a long time, or even when you laugh a lot. People talk about an "endorphin high" after sport — a light, warm feeling that comes when the pain of the effort . Though actually, calling it "the happy chemical" is a bit loose. Your body has several chemicals that change how you feel; endorphins are the ones that mainly take the edge off pain, a little like a pain medicine the body makes for itself. You hear the word in sport, in health class, and in everyday talk. It is not slang, but it is not only a doctor's word either.
