An encomium is a lot of praise given in a formal way — usually a whole speech or a piece of writing that exists to honor someone. It is not a quick well done. The word is old and high; it belongs in books, ceremonies, and careful reviews, not in the lunch line. Sometimes a writer uses it with a small smile: if a book is “an encomium,” it may be all praise and little honest judgment. Use it when you mean a full, high tribute. For ordinary life, praise, or a speech in someone’s honor, will do.
