An emoticon is a small sign made from keyboard marks to show a feeling in email or on the internet. The classic one is :-) — tilt your head and it looks like a smile, often 'I am joking'. Others are :-( for sad and ;) for a wink. They are older than picture . Though actually, once phones filled with picture faces, many people stopped typing these, and some now use emoticon and as if they were the same word. They are not: an emoticon is typed from characters; an is a picture. The two words also come from different places, even though they sound close. Informal, and a bit old-fashioned now among young texters, but still understood.
