Emo is a kind of punk music whose songs are full of feeling — hurt, love, being alone, taking things hard. The longer name was emocore (emotional hardcore), first heard in the mid-1980s; emo as the short umbrella name followed soon after, and people now use it for a wide mix of bands, not one tight sound. It also named a look for a time: dark hair, skinny jeans, feelings worn on the outside. Though actually, young people often say I feel so emo just to mean they feel sad or low, even when no music is involved. That is a loose, everyday stretch from the music/style name. Informal in every use. Not a school-essay word, and not simply a of emotional.
