    Emery is a very hard, dark mineral. People crush it and stick it on paper or on a board, then rub metal, stone, or until they are smooth. A nail file with that rough grey surface is an emery board — that is the emery most people actually meet. There is also a verb: to emery something is to rub it with this powder. It is a workshop word and a bathroom-cabinet word, not a school-essay word. Though actually, it is not the same as emerald, the green jewel; they only look a little alike in English.
