An emendation is a change that takes a mistake out of something written — or the whole work of cleaning a text. Often it is one careful fix in an old book or a poem: a scholar says this word cannot be right, and offers a better one. You will meet it in universities and in notes at the back of serious books, not in everyday talk. Though actually, people sometimes mix it with amendment, which is a change to a law or a plan, not a fix to the letters on a page.
