An emcee is the person who stands at the front and keeps a show moving: they introduce the singers, tell you what is next, and talk to the crowd so nobody sits in silence. You will hear this at weddings, talent shows, radio, and hip-hop nights. It is simply a spelling of the letters M-C, which stand for “master of ceremonies” — the older, more formal name. “Emcee” looks like a real English word because it writes those letters the way they sound. You can also use it as a verb: to emcee a night means to be that person. “MC” and “emcee” are the same job, not two different ones. In more formal English, especially older writing, you still see master of ceremonies. On a music stage, MC/emcee is the normal word; at a banquet, some people still prefer the longer title. Though actually, in hip-hop, MC also grew a second flavour: a rapper who holds the microphone. That grew out of the same “person on the mic” idea, but it is not only “the one who introduces other people.”
