    To embolden someone is to give them more courage — to make them braver, or more ready to act. A teacher’s kind words can embolden a shy student. A win can embolden a team to try something bigger. News writers also use it when a group becomes bolder after good news, and though actually there can be a warning in that: “emboldened” sometimes means they now dare to do something other people may not like. The core is still courage, not size and not the look of letters on a page. Everyday speech often just says “give someone courage” or “make someone braver.”
