An embargo is an official order that stops trade, travel, or communication with a country or group, usually as a form of pressure or punishment — 'a trade embargo' means one country refuses to buy from or sell to another. The word is also used more narrowly for stopping the release of information until a set time — reporters might receive a story 'under embargo,' meaning they have it early but can't publish until the embargo lifts.
