To elide a sound is to leave it out when you say a word or a string of words. In fast speech, people elide letters and even whole : family often comes out closer to FAM-lee; and can sound like an. Poets elide a vowel so a line has the right number of beats. It is a specialist word from language study; ordinary speakers just say we drop the sound or we don’t pronounce it. Though actually, people who write essays also stretch elide to mean “slide past” an awkward fact or difference — they leave it out of the argument the way a speaker leaves out a sound. The first home of the word is still the missing sound.
