Elevenses is a very British, rather word for a small snack in the middle of the morning — usually a cup of tea or coffee and a , or a little cake, around eleven o’clock. It is not a proper meal, and it is not brunch. Office workers, , and people in old stories have elevenses; it sounds , a bit old-fashioned, and slightly funny if you say it in a very modern office. You have elevenses rather than eat elevenses. Americans would more often say a coffee break. In Taiwan, 下午茶 is the famous cousin; this is the quieter morning version, and far fewer people here have a name for it. Though actually, the time is the whole point: it comes from an older dialect word for the eleven-o’clock meal, so it is not a fancy imported ritual — just “the eleven o’clock one”, said in a friendly way.
