Electioneering is the speeches, posters, door-knocking, smiling for cameras, and other busy work meant to make people vote for a person or a party. It is the persuading, not the vote itself and not the election day. Newspapers like the word. Though actually it can sound a little cool, even slightly unkind, as if someone is working the crowd rather than simply “campaigning.” You can feel that shade or you can use it as a plain name for the activity; both happen. It names a stretch of behaviour, not one speech. You do not usually count it: people say “a lot of electioneering,” not “three electioneerings.” It belongs to news and political talk, not to the kitchen.
