1. 1

An elderberry is the small fruit of the elder tree (a or small tree). The berries grow in bunches and turn very dark purple, almost black, when they are ripe. They are sharp, and many people do not eat them raw; they cook them into syrup, jam, or a drink. In health shops you will see elderberry products sold for colds — though actually that is a use people believe in, not something this word itself proves. The “elder” here is the tree. It is not the elder that means an older person in a family. Those are two different words that happen to look the same. The fruit-word is everyday and a little country-sounding; you meet it in recipes, gardens, and on bottles of syrup.
