Eid is the name Muslims use for two great feast days, not one. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of , the month of fasting: people pray, visit family, give to those in need, and eat together again in the daytime. Eid al-Adha comes later in the year. It is the Festival of Sacrifice, tied to the story of Ibrahim (Abraham) and to the Hajj pilgrimage. In English, people often say just Eid when the calendar makes the one they mean obvious, and they greet each other with Eid Mubarak (blessed Eid). These are happy, public holidays in Muslim communities, with new clothes, food, and family, not a small private ritual. The word itself is simply feast or festival in Arabic, and it reached English by way of Persian.
