1. 1

EHIC is the abbreviation of European Health Insurance Card. It is a free card for people who already have public health cover in the European Union, and in some nearby countries in the same scheme. If you are in that system at home, the card lets you get necessary public healthcare when you visit another country in the scheme, on similar terms to local people. It is not a travel-insurance policy. It does not cover every private clinic, every rescue, or every trip gone wrong, and you may still pay the same patient charges locals pay. Though actually, this is a European card. A student in Taiwan cannot get one through Taiwan's NHI; for a trip to Europe you still want your own travel insurance. After the UK left the EU, many UK residents now carry a GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) instead, which works in a similar way in the EU. People usually say the letters: E-H-I-C.
