A thick, sweet drink that many people in the United States and Canada have at Christmas. You make it from beaten eggs, sugar, and milk or cream; often you add rum, brandy, or whisky, and a little nutmeg on top. Families with children usually buy or make a version with no alcohol. It is a holiday drink, not an everyday breakfast drink, even though it has eggs and milk in it. In Taiwan you will mostly meet it in American films and shops around Christmas; it is not an old drink. The first part is egg. The second part, nog, is old, and nobody is sure what it first meant.

組成egg + nog. American English, from about 1775, though drinks like it are much older (for example posset). Nog is uncertain: perhaps Norfolk dialect nog, “strong ale”; perhaps a short form of noggin, a small wooden mug for alcohol; perhaps a variant of grog, a rum-and-water drink. Scholars still argue.
