EEO stands for Equal Employment Opportunity. In the United States it is the idea — and in many places the law — that a company should look at whether you can do the job, not at your race, sex, religion, or other things that have nothing to do with the work. You see “EEO employer” at the bottom of American job adverts. It is official, legal language, not a word friends use in a café. It names a principle, not a person and not an office. (The office that watches over it is the EEOC.) Other countries have the same idea under different names; this abbreviation is the US one.
