Eek is the little cry people write — and sometimes squeak — when they jump with fear or surprise: a mouse, a , a balloon that pops. It does not carry a deep meaning; it copies the sound. You see it in comics, messages, and jokes more than in careful writing. It feels playful and a bit silly, not like a scream of real danger. Cartoons often give it to someone who has just seen a mouse, which is a joke more than real life. Though actually, as a spoken sound it is just that squeak; as a written word it is almost a cartoon label. There is a rare verb, to eek, meaning to make that sound, but you will almost only meet the cry itself.
