A pale, soft, or yellowish light brown — the colour of cloth like linen or cotton before anyone has bleached or it. Think of an unbleached cotton bag, or paper that is not quite white. It sits between and cream, a little duller and less yellow than cream. Works as an adjective ('an ecru blouse') and as a noun ('the walls are painted in ecru'). This is a specialist word: you meet it on clothing labels, paint charts, furniture catalogues and in fashion writing, almost never in ordinary conversation. If you said it in a shop, some English speakers would not be sure what colour you meant. Often written écru with the French accent, and said EK-roo or AY-kroo — both are heard.
