If you do something eclectically, you do not stay inside one style, one school, or one group. You pick pieces from here and there — especially the pieces you think are best — and put them together. A room eclectically might mix an old wooden table with a new lamp. A musician who works eclectically might borrow from jazz, folk, and pop in one song. The word is a little educated; in casual talk people say “from all over” or “a bit of everything.” It is often a compliment: you chose on purpose. People also stretch it to mean merely “mixed,” even when nobody was choosing the best.
