    An earl is a man with a high title in Britain. The title is old, and a family often keeps it for many years, from father to son. A duke is higher than an earl; an earl is still far above an ordinary person. In other countries people say count for a similar rank; in Britain the word is earl. The wife of an earl is a countess. You will mostly meet it in history, in news about nobles, or in a name like “the Earl of …”. It is formal. Do not call a boss or a rich man an earl unless he really holds that title. Though actually, Earl with a capital letter is also a first name, and that is just a name, not a rank.
