An eaglet is a young eagle — a baby in the nest, or a youngster still living with its parents and learning to fly. You hear it in nature programmes and in stories. You would not call a full-grown eagle an eaglet; the -let makes it small or young. It is a quiet, factual word, not slang and not a joke.
