E-learning is studying with a computer and the internet, often at home, instead of sitting in a room while a teacher talks in front of you. You might watch a lesson on a screen, click through questions, send work online, or meet a teacher by video. Schools, universities, and companies use the word for whole courses that live on a website. People also stretch it. A class that still meets in a building, but uses a lot of videos and quizzes on phones, may get called e-learning too, and some speakers treat it as almost the same as online learning or distance learning. The tidy picture is “study at home on a computer”; real talk is looser, and includes any learning that runs through electronic tools. It is a normal, slightly official word — you see it on school posters and in job training — not slang. The little e- is the same flag as in e-mail: this happens .

Electronic was built from electric (about power and machines that use it); that story goes back to a Greek word for amber, the yellow stone that pulls bits of dust when you rub it. Learning is the everyday word for studying and coming to know things.
