E-commerce is buying and selling goods and services — and the other business work that sits around that, like taking orders, taking payment, and sending parcels — through a computer and the internet. A stall on Shopee or a company taking orders on its own site is doing e-commerce. The word is at home in business class and in newspapers; in casual talk people often just say “selling online.” It is bigger than “shopping”: the shopper’s click is only one side; the seller’s whole internet business is the other. It does not mean the goods themselves are electronic — you can sell shoes this way. The name is simply e- (from electronic) plus commerce (buying and selling).
