Dyspepsia is the doctor's word for indigestion: a heavy, sour, or burning feeling in the upper belly after you eat, sometimes with burping or a hot rise in the chest. At the table people say indigestion or an upset stomach; on a clinic note you will see dyspepsia. It is not one single disease. Eating too fast, rich food, worry, or a real problem in the stomach can all sit under it. Though actually, a little dyspepsia after a huge meal is common and often passes on its own. The kind that keeps coming back is the kind you tell a doctor about, because more than one cause can hide behind the same heavy feeling. The word sounds severe because it is Greek and clinical, but the everyday idea is simple: the food is not sitting well.
