Duplicitous describes a person or a piece of behaviour that is two-faced on purpose: they smile and agree in front of you, then do the opposite behind your back, or they tell two different stories to two different people. The heart of it is dishonest behaviour meant to trick someone. It is a strong, rather formal or writerly word — you meet it in news, novels, and serious talk about or friendship, not usually in a child’s quarrel (kids are more likely to say two-faced, sneaky, or a liar). Calling someone duplicitous is an accusation, not a joke. It names a pattern, not one small lie.
