The duodenum is the first part of the small bowel, right under the stomach. It is a short, C-shaped tube. Food, now a thick liquid, leaves the stomach and enters here; juices from the liver and mix in and start the next stage of breaking food down. You do not see or feel it from the outside. The word belongs to biology and medicine; ordinary talk is more likely to say “the gut” or “the bowel” unless a doctor has named this part. Though actually it is quite short — old doctors measured it as about twelve finger-widths, which is how it got the name.

組成From Medieval Latin duodēnum digitōrum, “space of twelve digits (finger-widths),” from duodēnī, “twelve each,” + digitōrum, from digitus, “finger.” They named it for its length.
