A dungeon is a dark prison under the ground, most often pictured under a castle. In the past, people were locked there as punishment or while they waited. The room is stone, cold, and hard to leave; stories fill it with chains. Today almost nobody keeps a real one, so you meet the word in history, films, and games. In games, though actually, a “dungeon” is often a whole maze of rooms full of monsters, not only a prison cell — players go in to fight and find treasure. The word feels old and story-like. For a modern jail we say prison or cell.

組成From Middle English dongeoun, from Anglo-Norman donjun and Old French donjon, originally the keep — the strongest tower of a castle. That French word seems to come from Vulgar Latin *dominiōnem, from Latin dominus, “master, lord,” perhaps as “the building that stands over the rest.” The “underground prison” meaning grew in Anglo-Norman, and likely mixed with Old English dung, “underground prison.” It is a doublet of donjon.
