Dungeness is a place, not a thing you can hold: a wide, stony in Kent, in the south-east of England, sitting on the English Channel. It is a huge, almost empty beach of small stones, with a lighthouse and a strange, flat light. Two nuclear power stations stand there, so the name turns up in news about electricity and safety as well as in travel and birdwatching. People also say Dungeness for a fat crab in North America, though actually that crab is named after a different Dungeness, in Washington state, not this English one. As a place-name it is always written with a capital D, and you meet it on maps more than in daily chat.
