Dung is the solid waste of animals, especially cows, horses, and other farm animals. Farmers have always needed it: spread on fields it feeds the soil, and then people often say , which sounds cleaner. Dung is the blunter word, the one that still smells a bit on the page. Children say poo; doctors say ; a farm still says dung. You will meet dung heap, dung beetle (a beetle that rolls a ball of it), and a verb, to dung a field, meaning to spread it. It is not a swear word, but it is not polite dinner talk either. Though actually, English already had this word a very long time ago; a French word for the same thing once sat beside it and then lost. The idea is ordinary and old, not rude by nature — only the nose makes us shy.
組成From Middle English dung, from Old English dung, from a Germanic word, from a very old root meaning 'to cover' — dung covers the ground, and is spread as a cover to feed the soil. It pushed out a French-built word fen that English once used for the same thing.
