Dumpy is an way to describe a person’s body as short, thick, and — in the speaker’s eyes — not good-looking. It is about shape more than weight alone: not tall, a bit heavy, maybe awkward in clothes. People also use it for things that look squat, like a dumpy little sofa, but the use is about humans. It is informal and old-fashioned-sounding, the sort of word that appears in stories and in mean talk, not in a kind description of a friend. Though actually it does not mean dirty (that is a dump, a messy place) and it does not mean stupid (that is dumb). First written down around 1750; nobody is sure where it came from. It may sit near dumpling — soft and round — or near dump, but that is only a guess, so it is safer not to build a family tree. If you need a kinder word for a short, solid body, this is not it.
