Dulles is a big airport in the United States. It serves Washington, D.C., the capital, but it does not sit in the city centre. It is out in Virginia, in the country around the capital, and many long and international flights use it. The full name is Washington Dulles International Airport. On tickets you will often see the code IAD, which does not look like the name at all. People say “Dulles” the way others say “Taoyuan”: the name of that airport, not a common noun. It was named after John Foster Dulles, an American government leader. Though actually, people flying to Washington also use Reagan National (closer in) and sometimes Baltimore; Dulles is the one travellers often mean for long flights.
