DUI is the American name for the crime of driving when you have had too much alcohol to drive safely. The letters stand for driving under the influence. In the United States you will see it in the news, in police reports, and in court. People also say “a DUI” for the charge itself: he got a DUI. It is a serious legal word, not a joke. Though actually, “under the influence” can cover drugs as well as drink in many places; everyday talk still jumps to alcohol first. Other labels exist for a close idea (some US states say ; Britain often says drink-driving). Same kind of crime, different name on the paper.
